Welcome to The House Of Fun – Madness Singer’s Previous Property Up For Sale
Want to live in the former home of the singer who churned out pop hits such as ‘Our House’ and ‘House of Fun’? A property in Camden formerly owned by Madness singer Suggs is now back on the market, with an asking price just shy of £2m.
The property, an enormous Camden mews, was snapped up by the singer in 1981, when Madness were just about to hit their peak. He lived there for four years, before selling it to the current owners in 1985.
While living in the property, Madness wrote and released some of the biggest hits. Could Suggs have drawn inspiration for the hit ‘Our House’ from this quaint London mews? Suggs certainly speaks fondly enough of the house to draw that conclusion. In his autobiography, he says:
“Finally we arrived at my newly purchased house in Camden Mews. It had been part of the stables for the bigger houses at the back. It was pretty, but tiny. One half of the downstairs was a garage which we were eventually going to convert.”
Suggs’ family grew, and soon the mews house became too small for them. They moved to their current family home in Holloway, and left the mews in the capable hands of the new owners. The conversion that Suggs never managed to complete was carried out by the next inhabitants – the full property now spans three separate mews houses, which have been merged into one 2,767 square foot property.
The property features a high-specification kitchen, a spacious double reception room, three double bedrooms and the same number of bathrooms. A balcony is available off the main bedroom, and there’s scope to turn one of the upstairs sitting rooms into an additional bedroom for larger families. There’s an internal garage, and the house is just a short stroll away from the Camden Town tube station.
Music fans will love soaking up the culture in this area. The property is just a stone’s throw from iconic venues like the Roundhouse, KOKO and the Electric Ballroom. With the mews’ own musical history, this is the perfect buy for those with music running through their veins.
