The Rivian R1T – A High Spec Electric Pickup with 400 Mile Range
EV start-up Rivian, founded by Massachusetts Institute of Technology graduate, RJ Scaringe, has been working under the radar for almost 10 years. In that time, they have been mostly securing funding and then ultimately buying a former Mitsubishi factory in Normal, Illnois.
Their first model, the R1T, was unveiled just before the LA Auto Show in Los Angeles and could be the best specification EV on the market. The four-door pickup truck style vehicle is powered by a 180kWh battery that will last for up to 400 miles, utilises four motors to produce 750hp and can achieve 0 to 60mph in just three seconds. Its modular design will make it easier to use upgradeable hardware including GPS, radar and LIDAR and it has an incredible towing capacity of more than 11,000lbs. Higher specification models will be released to begin with, then lower specification models a little after the launch. Price starts at $69,000 and a $1,000 refundable deposit will ensure buyers get one.
