Island Home Of Notorious Lighthouse On Market For £325,000

Little Ross, an island which hit the headlines almost 60 years ago has just gone on the market for £325,000. With its remote location off the southern coast of Scotland, Little Ross, a 29-acre island, may seem like an idyllic spot for anyone who loves peace and quiet, however it hasn’t always been so peaceful. Back in 1960, national newspapers were full of the story of Hugh Clarke, the island’s lighthouse keeper, who was found murdered by some visitors. Robert Dickson, his assistant was eventually given a life sentence for his murder.
Historical Lighthouse Not Part Of Sale
With an asking price of £325,000, this island off Scotland’s Meikle Ross headland, is home to a pebbly beach, a pretty natural harbour, cottages and, of course, the notorious lighthouse. The lighthouse itself, however, which was built and designed by Alan Stevenson and which was first brought into use in 1843, does not form part of the sale. Having been fully automated for over five decades, the lighthouse today is unmanned, and is maintained by The Northern Lighthouse Board.
Isolated, Eco-Friendly Hideaway
Buying Little Ross is not for the faint-hearted, as any potential purchaser must be a capable seaman since there is no other way to get to the island other than by using their own boat – or a helicopter! For their £325,000, buyers would be getting a 6 bedroomed, B-listed cottage together with a courtyard, and purchasers could rest assured that they would be reducing their carbon footprint exponentially since the island is off-grid and operates solely on power that is generated via solar panels and a small wind turbine.
Holiday Home Or Island Retreat
The property has been listed by Galbraith estate agents who believe that there will be a lot of interest in the island as a holiday home or retreat for those who are looking for an alternative lifestyle. As private islands are a rare feature on the market, so to find one for sale at such an affordable price and with additional properties and a habitable house is like gold dust for the investor.
