A world away from the glittering lights of New York, you’ll find the Podmakers Escape Pod – a charming circular structure that houses just a single room. The Escape Pod is being sold as a luxury outdoor space with a multitude of applications – it can be used as a studio, an office, a holiday home or a guest room. Best of all, the pods are entirely customisable to fit your own needs.
Made from birch ply and European oak, and clad in cedar shingles, the pod is very tactile. It sits on a raised platform about half a metre off the floor, and this can be rotated to ensure optimum natural light. The window placement, the heating options, the electrics and insulation can all be adjusted to suit the customer – a customer in Canada might require more insulation than, say, a customer in Spain, for example, and this is reflected in the customisation options.
One of the most impressive features of the small pod is the plug door, reminiscent of the airlocks doors you see on planes. This boosts the insulation of the property and helps keep it warm. There are a number of configurations available for the interior, depending on how you plan to use the pod – you can have a folding table and plenty of chairs installed if you plan to use the space as a social area, a large bed for the snug option, and even double desk space if you want to use the pod as your home office.
