A traditional London property has been transformed into a contemporary, family home by Sketch Architects. Chivalry Road was once a typical, terraced house with rooms that felt disconnected and didn’t suit the day to day lives of the family living there.
The brief was to create a more useable layout that maximised the existing space on the ground floor, as well as increasing the space in the basement whilst making sure both areas felt connected. Huge changes were made to the property to achieve this. In order to bring the basement and the ground floor kitchen together, the kitchen floor was lowered and by putting a glass partition at the top of the basement stairs, the two rooms now flow beautifully. This is on top of adding an extension with a glass ceiling which allows light to flood the additional space.
The same light and airy aura was achieved by redesigning the stairway and creating a double height, exposed brick wall that allows light to pass from the top of the property right down to the basement. This ensured the basement wasn’t dark and dingy, as they often are. The feeling of space on the ground floor was enhanced by taking out some internal walls and replacing them with exposed steel beams – these sit perfectly against the glass and exposed brickwork, creating a stunning industrial look. The front reception room is particularly clever, with a full height glass wall meaning you can stand in the kitchen and see the entire house from front to back, yet still have the segregation needed in a family home. Finally, the house is dotted with ingenious storage ideas – a necessity for busy family life. Every spare space works hard as storage and a work area has even been created in the eaves on the landing.
This has to be one of our favourite projects ever at Propertista. It’s stylish, clever and beautifully executed.
