With Halloween fast approaching, we thought it would be fun to find some spooky looking castles that are currently listed for sale for this week’s Propertista blog post.
Castles often have histories that go back centuries, and a large number of these, we’d imagine, have had their fair share of murders and gruesome deaths. Because of this, castles are often the type of property where rumours abound of mysterious spooky sightings and paranormal happenings making them the perfect property focus at the spookiest time of the year.
So, without further ado, here are five of our favourite spooky-looking castles that are listed for sale on the Castleist website.
Classic Spooky – Grade II Listed Castle in Gwent, Wales. Guide Price £950k – Auction
For our first spooky property, we have found Pencoed Castle in Gwent, a Grade II Listed Castle that was originally built in the Thirteenth Century and is first noted in the Wentwood survey of 1270 as being occupied by Sir Richard de la More.
The castle has many features typical of castles that feature in scary movies such as turrets, huge inglenook fireplaces and grey stone walls.
The current estate includes the castle, farmhouse, bungalow, outbuildings and dovecote all sited on a large plot of approximately 26.23 Hectares (64.8 Acres).
Planning permission has been granted for the restoration of the castle, conversion of the outbuildings to offices and for 12 new dwellings.
The farmhouse (housing three residential flats) and a two-bedroom bungalow are subject to assured shorthold tenancies, while the castle and one of the flats within the farmhouse are currently vacant.

Haunting Interior – 14th Century Castle Saluzzo, Italy €2.5m
Up for sale with Sotheby’s International Realty, we have found an eery looking castle called the Castle of Castellar, which overlooks the village of Saluzzo in the Piemonte region of north-western Italy.
Originally built in the 14th century by the Marquis of Saluzzo as a stronghold, it has since been rebuilt and extensively renovated. The last restoration was at the hands of architect Alfredo d’Andrade in the 19th century.
Offering a classic drawbridge and a fortified gate design you would expect in any fairytale castle, it is the interior of this castle that has a ghostly feel. For example, the lounge is decorated with hunting trophies and a statue of a man in a military uniform you expect to jump out at any moment just like the statues in Scooby-Doo and The Museum. Furthermore, a bedroom also has creepy babies hanging on the wall for no apparent reason!!
Offsetting the spooky interior, the exterior of the castle is nestled in a stunning garden with a swimming pool and lawned area and stunning countryside views.

Dark Dungeon – Substantial Moated Castle Staffordshire, ENGLAND £POA
With a fabulous moat, three converted turrets, impressive gateways, walled towers, wood-panelled rooms and 21 acres of parkland, we think this impressive castle would be the perfect place to go ghostbusting this Halloween.
Just imagine living or working there years ago…
The historic Grade I Listed, 16,224 sq. ft 17th-century Caverswall Castle located near Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire, which boasts 18 bedrooms, 13 bathrooms and a spooky dungeon has recently been sold through the receivers via Jackson Stops for an ‘undisclosed fee’.
Ancillary accommodation includes the three converted Turrets (ideal as holiday lets) – Sir Thomas More, Sister Josephine and Matthew Cradock apartments, each with a sitting room, kitchenette, bedroom and shower room. Ancient Battlefield – XVI Century Fortress Salamanca, SPAIN €15m
Step back in time, four centuries to be precise, with this 16th-century Spanish fortress in Salamanca in western Spain near the borders of France and Portugal.
This dream home boasting 25 hectares of land is listed for sale on Castleist for a cool €15 million.
Check out the photos to see the huge walled compound, crumbling entranceways and far-reaching views that really give you an idea of just how impressive this stone garrison would have been back in days of old. We imagine, being so close to neighbouring countries there would have been a few fatal fights and ghastly deaths on this land.

Modern-day Lakeside Castle in Kansas City Missouri $4.995m
Our final castle is a modern-day residence that was inspired by medieval/Victorian Ashford Castle in Ireland with its majestic turrets and historic battlements.
The residence sits on three lots spanning 350 feet of shoreline and was built using custom hammered stone in English Ashlar pattern and 100-year-old Carthage marble.
Castle-like architectural details include the round turrets, 18-foot ceilings, hand-scraped oak floors, original stained glass, sweeping stone staircase, mid-19th-century hand-carved fireplace mantle, round dining room with 200-year-old hand-sculpted fireplace mantle and custom mural and bedrooms with richly coloured wall coverings and four-poster beds.
Although modern, we think this property has a haunted vibe. We can just imagine the fog rolling in from the lake making the house have a spooky silhouette. We wonder if it’s popular with trick-or-treaters at Halloween…
